God Bless America
In these times of world turmoil, it is fabulous to live in America where we are all entitled to voice our opinions and vocalize our observations. The American Kennel Club has a Code of Sportsmanship that does not 'restrict' those rights. This is just one of many sites that anyone can visit, or not, as they choose, that express one person's opinions and observations regarding dogs and judges. If you really want nasty details on these subjects try visiting any of those sites that explain why or why not a certain judge is recommended or not. These are just my thoughts and, for the most part, dogs other than my own are rarely mentioned unless they stand out TO ME in one way or another. For example Rockhurst Mylad Peter Pan, the exemplary puppy that went Winners Dog at Havanese Nationals.
If you don't like what I have to say, don't come back. If you do great, but I still don't care. This blog is written for myself as a record of our wins, thoughts, and activities and for those FRIENDS that want to see what is going on with us and our dogs, not for people who are threatened by this or make threats against us. I feel sorry for both, especially when both of those are rolled into one.

Arlene at Peluito Havanese has left a new comment on your post "Emporia Kennel Club, Topeka, KS":
I have never seen such a display of poor sportsmanship. Some of the comments in this blog are an example of some of the vilest, nastiest remarks and poor sportsmanship ever. What a shame!

I am truly sorry that she feels this way, but it is America and I am entitled to my opinions and observations.
Having never met or corresponded with Ms. Etzig, to the best of my recollection, and cannot locate an email for her so since I have no way to respond directly to Ms. Etzig, I do not know exactly what part has offended her.
I say nothing here that I would not say directly to anyone's face. You be the judge.
Sincerely,
Darlene Scheiris

Watch Those Topline Comb-Overs
So what's with this comb-over thing? The Havanese is not supposed to be parted, but some judges care about that, and some don't. Now people don't seem to count this 'rump comb-over' as a part. If spectators can see it from outside the ring, and can even see the change in hair pattern, then ask "why does that dog's hair go over his butt?" why can't the judge? The only Havanese that you see it on have a level topline, or it levels out when they move, or have handlers that think they need to do this, so this is the handler's way of giving them a rise in the topline. The thing is Judges, do you really not see this part on the non show side of these dogs that brings the hair up and over the rump? or do you choose to ignore it? If you saw it, did you not wonder why they would bring the hair up and over? Maybe you are the same judges that can't tell, or again choose to ignore, the dogs that have had their topnots thinning-sheared, back-combed, and sprayed into place so that even Hurricane Earl couldn't mess it up.

Brandy, or Alice, or Alex placed 3rd in her class today. We had high hopes for her. Even being in season, she moved around the ring happily with her tail up, until Judge Carol Noe decided that it took more than one lap around the ring to make her decision on placements in this huge entry. Then Brandy decided that she was done. Congratulations to Susie Williams' bitch 1st and WB.

Christmas Bell Chavez ~~~ October 6, 2001 - August 17, 2011
Today our dear friends, Jane and Jessica Chavez, lost their long time companion, Christmas Bell Chavez. A Bichon Frise, known to all as Belle, was everything you could want in a companion and spoiled rotten to boot!
She had Jane trained well. Belle will be missed by all who knew her. We will always remember Belle for the gift that she gave us...our friendship with Jane. Rest in Peace little one.

Roché went Best of Breed under Judge Elizabeth 'Liz' Simon.
We had hopes for a piece of the group as Judge Ann Hearn gave Roché an AOM at the HCA Regional Specialty that was right before Nationals. On the table, Judge Hearn told Dave how good it was to see them again, and that she wanted him to move Roché out more, "Because you know how much I like that Bichon movement."
The Havanese gait is lively, elegant, resilient, and unique, contributing greatly to the breed’s overall essential typiness. The characteristic "spring" is caused by the strong rear drive combined with a "flashy" front action effected by the short upper arm. While a truly typey dog is incapable of exaggerated reach and drive, the action does not appear stilted or hackneyed. The slightly higher rear may cause a correctly built specimen to show a flash of pad coming and going. The front legs reach forward freely. There is good extension in the rear and no tendency toward sickle hocks. The topline holds under movement, neither flattening nor roaching. Head carriage is typically high, even on the move.
From the Havanese Standard:
Because correct gait is essential to breed type, the Havanese should be presented at natural speed on a loose lead.
Yes, they are similar, but definitely NOT the same.

Gait
Movement at a trot is free, precise and effortless. In profile the forelegs and hind legs extend equally with an easy reach and drive that maintain a steady topline. When moving, the head and neck remain somewhat erect and as speed increases there is a very slight convergence of legs toward the center line. Moving away, the hindquarters travel with moderate width between them and the foot pads can be seen. Coming and going, his movement is precise and true.

New River Valley Kennel Club, Salem, VA Show Sunday
Well, Dave got people talking. "Where's David?" "Who is that showing his dog?" "Why are you showing David's dog?" They were all still wondering where Dave was while handler Carol Rice and Roché walked out of the ring with a Best of Breed ribbon! All while Dave was driving to the airport to make an appointment that he had in Florida that afternoon.
Special Thanks to Carol and Wally Rice for helping out with Roché while Dave was away.

RKC Bred By Elite Dog Competition BEST IN SHOW
MBIS AM GCH CAN CH Adorabull That's Better Than Sex
Roché went Best in Show Bred By Elite Dog Competition.
Roanoke Kennel Club “BRED BY” ELITE DOG Competition
Saturday, August 6, 2011
To qualify for the RKC “Bred by” Elite Dog Competition all dogs must
be entered and shown in one of the RKC shows, Friday or Saturday.
The handler in the Elite Dog Competition must be a breeder and owner
of the entry.
Three judges will be randomly chosen immediately prior to the
competition. Judges will be Licensed Handlers, PHA Handlers or AKC
Registered Judges.
All dogs will be judged Olympic style using a 1-10 point rating system.
Each dog will be judged according to his/her own AKC Standard. Points
from all three judges will be tallied after all judging has been completed.
The dogs with the most points may be examined by each judge to ensure
correct mouth/bite and that the dog is unaltered. In case of a tie, the
three existing judges and a fourth randomly chosen judge will be issued
new scorecards for re-evaluation.
Judges will award points for the following:
1) Type 4) Front Movement 7) Free Stack
2) Style 5) Rear Movement 8) Soundness
3) Side Gait (circle) 6) Hand Stack 9) Overall Conformation

MBIS AM GCH CAN CH Adorabull That's Better Than Sex
Roché went Best of Breed Friday under Judge Raymond Filburn.
Roché was totally Dumped under Judge Rita Holloway.
Does Rita Holloway really know what she wants or does she just say what you think she wants to hear then forgets how she contradicts herself? In February Desi lost to PJ. In New Jersey, on Dave's way out of the ring, Mrs. Holloway stopped Dave and told her that Desi really wasn't her type, she liked a shorter backed, cobbier type dog. Not that I would call either one 'cobby.' OK, we can live with that. Note to self: Bring Roché out to see her, he is very similar to PJ. She turns up on a panel, OK, let's see how this will go, bringing her a dog that is 'her type.' Today Mrs. Holloway 'really prefers a bigger, longer backed dog' (and one with a bad topline and cow hocks to boot!). It's not like Dave is unrecgonizable. If you are going to make things up, at least remember who you said what to, or don't say anything at all. Or just say "Dave, I don't like you, and no matter what you show me, you will lose, so don't bother entering under me ever again. You could bring me the dog I gave BIS to yesterday, and it just wouldn't matter." I would appreciate the honesty.

Judges! Why can't the mean what they say?
When they say 'Move them slow' do they know what slow is?
When they say "Loose Lead" do they really mean: "Show him like a poodle, and no need for the front feet to touch the ground."
It is no wonder you see so many discouraged people at dog shows. Especially the newer people. Win or lose if the judge is consistent and rewards people who give them what they ask for you can leave the ring thinking "Crap, I can't believe I lost." or when the judge puts up the opposite of what they ask for the response for others is "What the heck were they thinking? I'm not showing to this judge again if they don't even recognize what they are asking for."
From the Havanese Standard:
Because correct gait is essential to breed type, the Havanese should be presented at natural speed on a loose lead.
Doesn't say anything about running while strung up on a resco!
Not Just My Opinion.
