Chickasha, Oklahoma

Beautiful Downtown Chickasha, Oklahoma!
Trains and red dirt.  That’s all folks.
Unless you count a few restaurants that belong on “Restaurant Impossible”

The show site was going to be available to move in at 3 PM on Wednesday, or whenever the club decided they were ready.  We arrived around 10 and people were already ‘staking out’ their spots.  You couldn’t plug in to electric, you couldn’t bring a chair to sit on, but you could lay your cord out from the plug to the spot you wanted, but remember, don’t you dare plug it in, and you could stand there on the concrete (nobody was in a hurry to get a spot in the red dirt), until they said you could officially come in and set up.   Vendors were coming and going.  They finally decided that if exhibitors wanted an ‘edge’ spot, they could set up.  Anyone that wanted a center spot had to wait until the last vendor was done and had driven out of the building.  Come to find out, they didn’t tell the last vendor that everyone was waiting on her so she was taking her time.  Finally someone asked her how much longer she would be and as soon as she realized we were waiting on her, she profusely apologized and drove out of the building within 5 minutes.  So, all in all, after a few hours of standing on the concrete, we got a descent spot with electric and some OK overhead lighting.

Bathed and groomed until 10 PM, headed to the hotel, and so we can get up at 5:45 on Thursday morning.

Havanese
Boo - Lil Scamps Night On The Town (Desi X Panda)  1st
Chocobeast - That's Eh Sweet Chocolate Seduction (Roché X Meg) 1st
Roché - Totally walked - actually he didn't.  We let a Jr. Handler, Madeline, show him.  She did OK but Roché took total advantage of her and tried to play.  He
did his 'bunny-hop' so bad it had people asking if he was hurt.  What a dufus!  I am so glad that he has his Gold Level Grand Champion now.  He can stay home and make babies and play all he wants. Thank you all for your concern though.   Roché is fine, just a real pain in our you-know-whats sometime.

Yesterday, Friday, November 2, 2012, was Dave's 50th Birthday and our 8th Anniversary.
Traveling made it very challenging trying to plan a 'surprise' for him since we were together basically 24-7 for the last 3 weeks.  But, I did manage to pull off a little bit, with the help of some dear friends.
Jennifer Stine helped me order, pick up, and deliver the cakes.
My sister, Vicki Dike, and our brother Tim Veseling, drove 2 1/2 hours bringing decorations, flowers, presents, and a party.
Many friends sent presents and cards that were collected at our house while we were in Canada and given to Dave in a big bundle to open on Saturday.
Then there was Vicki Vest, Zen's mom.  She took much time and many photos to make a slide show presentation '50 Shades of Dave.'  It was awesome, and after I videotaped Dave watching it for the first time, I set up the computer and left it on a loop for anyone to watch.  It was quite a hit.  I will try to set up a link to it or embed it in here.
We had a nice dinner, with Vicki, Tim, and Jeanne Woods.  Of course they screwed up Dave & my dinners, but food is secondary, it was the togetherness that was important, and much enjoyed.

Not So Special Anymore...

First Westminster, then Eukanuba.  Shows that we all hoped we might be invited to someday.  Then when we got that invitation in the mail...IT WAS SPECIAL!  We called our friends, we made plans.  It meant something to be invited to those shows.  For Westminster, you had to be in the Top 5 of your breed and Eukanuba was the Top 25, then the Bred By Champions, then the Puppy Champions, then the Grand Champions, etc.

As Eukanuba qualification became easier, more people were still trying to qualify for it.  For the 125th Anniversary of the American Kennel Club, it was turned into a 'regular' all-breed show.  You didn't have to qualify.  OK, we got it, a special year, let's make an exception.  Then when we found out that all of the international exhibitors had portions, if not all, of their expenses covered by the AKC, that was upsetting.  Now, there will be the international exhibitors to deal with and THE AKC/EUKANUBA CLASSIC WILL BE A REGULAR ALL-BREED DOG SHOW.  Mike Canalizo said it was because 'people' wanted it.  NOT ANY PEOPLE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO.  Sounds like AKC thinks they will make more money.  It totally demeans all of the work that those of us have done over the years to qualify.  I, for one, will not be going out of my way to go to Eukanuba as long as it is a regular show.  What's the point in spending all of that money to travel across the country for an all-breed show, that is filled with excess restrictions and has people in charge that are a royal PIA.  That was the majority opinion at the dog show this weekend.  http://classic.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4633

Those of us that have dogs that have 'qualified' have received our special acknowledgements.  A link to a certificate in which we type our dog's name and print it out.  Yay.   Be still my heart!

At the Joplin show I heard another upsetting, and very disappointing, fact:  You don't have to be a Champion to enter Westminster!  Yep, you heard it right.  THE WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB DOG SHOW IS NO LONGER AN ALL-CHAMPION SHOW.  You just have to have a 3 point major or better to enter.  It will not be at the Garden, which is probably a good thing, since that was a disaster waiting to happen.  This year WKC will be held out at Pier 92/94.  Evening groups will still be held at Madison Square Garden.  With the new venue, they have increased the entry limit to 3,200.  They could have increased the entry limit and still kept it an all champion show, still kept it special.  Maybe invite the Top 10 of each breed instead of just the Top 5.  Still make us want to spend thousands of dollars just to attend that one big show.  That invitation makes people want to attend.  With Eukanuba in December, then Christmas, then Westminster, New York was always an expensive trip at a time when many people couldn't afford it.  Now I won't feel guilty for not going.  What is the incentive now?  Many people in the country that watch Westminster on TV won't know the difference, and the bottom line is what this is all coming down to, not the exhibitors or the prestige associated with the only All-Champion Show in the World.  Honestly, it doesn't do anything for me now, except make me sad.

I will always be proud of the awards that we won at both of these shows, but I don't feel the same desire to push ourselves to qualify for either one anymore, and come hell or high water make sure that we attend, no matter the breed judge.  Now it's just another show.  Let's just see where our stats end up and enter if we like the judge and if the weather is good.

It is the end of an era.

Route 66 Cluster

It wasn't a bad weekend at the show.  But before I post the results I have a few comments:

To the judges:  If you are going to actually 'go over' a dog, it should be more than just checking a dog's topline.  Stop ignoring the legs, the tail, the neck, and shoulders.  They are important too, people!  Coats:  (and this is not just for Havanese):  When you flip up the ends of the coat and drop it to see if it is light and airy, that applies to the topnot, muzzle, legs, etc.  If it is so ratted and/or matted that the handler can't get a brush through it, let alone a comb, that would fall into the category of 'improper grooming' or 'care and condition.'  I was visiting with the handler of another breed who said that they had just gotten the dog back from the owner and it was all matted.  They weren't worried as long as they could get the head and body looking OK, the legs and tail could wait, because their Saturday judge never touches below the top of the body.  They did not win, for other reasons, but I watched that judge, and in every breed I saw there were no legs touched.  Maybe they have a phobia?  A note to Havanese Judges:  Havanese should be double coated, or at least look it. Soft and silky does not mean Yorkie, or Puli.

The Route 66 Cluster people think very highly of their venue:
In the grand scheme of things - it isn't great.
1.  Reserved Grooming:  I watched the Aussie people have to put their crates up against the wall, their tables right in front of them, and when it was time to groom they had to stand in the aisles.  It was this way throughout the grooming area.  Many people that did not have reserved grooming were outside under a tent.  Some breeds were again shown outside on the grass, but you had to either walk to the other end of the building (from the grooming area) and down sort of a gravel drive, or through a ditch if you wanted to go across from the grooming area.   A 5' x 8' grooming space was $25.  Maybe if it was a 4 day event, but for 2 days?  There are also some 18" support columns that were included in some people's square footage - not right!  Some people didn't even have electric.  That's crazy.  That's barely space for 1 or 2 dogs and 1 table.  What ever happened to 5' x 10's or 10' x 10's?  Next week's show is $10 per 5' x 10.'  There was a similar situation with shows at Purina in September.  One weekend was $40 for grooming, the next weekend was $100 for the same space!  Don't get me wrong, I don't mind reserved grooming, I have even seen shows provide it at no charge.  It is a real benefit for people who cannot get there until late.  Some people who cannot afford it are SOL though.  We just wish that the clubs would get their stuff together. We don't mind paying but be fair and consistent.

The real kicker was that the club members that were peeling the tape off of the floor had the gall to suggest that since we paid for grooming the exhibitors should have to remove all of the tape and name signs!  C'mon people, we PAID to be there, in little tiny spots, you could at least pick up the tape.

2.    Trash pickup.  There were less than 1/2 dozen large garbage cans around the entire venue.  There were a few 'office size' trash cans.  Very few were emptied all weekend.  Finally on Sunday, during groups, when they were all so overflowing to the point that it took 3 bags to clean up around one of the inside cans, they got around to it.  As early as Saturday morning, the restrooms were in need of service, that did not come all weekend.  I told people several times starting about 8 AM on Saturday, and nothing was done.  Throughout the weekend, I learned that several other people, both men and women, asked that the restrooms be serviced, and nothing was done.  No restroom trash cans had been emptied all weekend either, and by Sunday, there was less than 1/2" of paper on 1 roll of toilet paper in the entire women's room across from the grooming area, and almost no paper towels.  Who's responsibility was this?  The club people didn't seem to know, and the people in the food area didn't seem to care.

3.   Food Service.  Really?  Is that what that was?  You post a restriction for no outside food or drink and our options are hot dogs and hamburgers, the ultimate mystery meat and shoe leather!

The Holiday Inn:
The Holiday Inn is convenient.  The food is tolerable.  The rooms were relatively clean.  Did we get the type of room that we reserved over a month ago, and then confirmed as we were driving back from Canada on Thursday?  No.  They basically called us liars saying that they didn't have that type of room.  We had the dates and times along with the name of the people whom we spoke with both when making the reservation and again when confirming, but that did not matter.  This is the room they have, that is the room we got.  Not much else we could do.  We have been in hotels since October 18 and most were good, some very good, some not so good.  This was in the middle.  And yes, we will probably stay there again next year.  Convenience wins out.

Two boys and Two girls are available.  We would prefer that they all went to show homes as they are turning out fabulously, but we can talk, if you absolutely cannot live without one of them.  These photos were taken on September 29, 2012.

I may be dainty, but don't hold that against me.
I am feminine and everyone will know that you have a girl.
But I can hold my own with the boys!

I'm a lover, not a fighter.
OK, I fight a little with my littermates.
But somebody has to be in charge, and it might as well be me.
I will listen to you though, and you will love me.

They call me 'substantial' but I'm not big.  Find out what they mean by that.
I think it means that I am just a very nice Havanese and very sweet.
Yeah, let's go with that.

My name is Spudz.  Yeah, it's cute, but what would you call me?
I don't want to go to Canada, so would somebody in the US please call my dad? 816-213-8100

Tina Fey X Quincy   Whelped August 24, 2012
Tina:                CH That’s Timeless Elegance - a beautiful Black Black and White White girl who finished quickly out of an ALL-CHAMPION LITTER and has been having fun on the couch.     http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1502518 - animal
Quincy:            CH That’s My Sweet River City Blues - a gorgeous silver, black, and white boy.  Out of another ALL CHAMPION Litter, Quincy finished very quickly and now is spending time hanging around the house and having fun at an occasional show.  Maybe we can talk his mom into showing him next year for his Grand Championship!  This is one little dog that deserves to be out there kicking some big fuzzy butt!    http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1422366 - animal

Both parents have awesome movement, great attitudes, and silky coats that they have passed on to these puppies.

Two boys and Two girls are available.  These puppies make you say “OMG - They are sooooooo CUTE!!!”

Am I not the sweetest thing ever?  How soon can I come to live with you?
I am 10 weeks old now and ready for a move.

What are you waiting for, I am tooooooo cute. And I know it!

You could have had me, but now you are too late.  I have new parents, and they are fabulous.

I really can stand straight, I just didn't want to.  So there!
I can bounce and jump my way right into your heart.
I don't want to be  a show dog, and that made my Moms and Dads sad, so pick me!

Sorry, I am spoken for.  You missed out. Na, Na.

Imelda X Zeus          Whelped August 23, 2012
Imelda:            CH That’s A Real Shoe In Eh - a beautiful, small-medium sized Black girl with a very silky coat, and great movement, out of another of our ALL-CHAMPION Litters.   http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1238572 - animal

Zeus:                AM CAN CH Mendota’s Adorabull Greek Legend - Silver and White with movement to die for.  He is your quintessential Havanese.  Zeus is just off of a Canadian high, winning the breed at the All-Breed show preceding the Canadian National Specialty show (entry of 60+), as well as Best Bred By, a Bred By Group 1, and an All Breed Group 3.  Watch for more of Zeus and his sister Selena in the ring next year.             http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1513702 - animal

People are fighting over me, get in on the action.
I am not as long as I look in this photo,  so ask for other ones!

Not Home Yet

Well, we are plugging away but aren't home yet.
We left Abbotsford, BC on late Monday afternoon, but traveling with this many dogs, every time we stop it is at least an hour, and if we find a place where we can let them safely play for longer we all get to stretch our legs.

I must say though, it was refreshing in the Northwest when people came up to us, their first reaction was "Are you going to a dog show?"  instead of the line that we all get in the Midwest and South: "How much for the puppies?"

It may have been a false sense of security, but it sure was nice.

Should be home this afternoon, at least for an hour or so.

Wish us luck.
