CORDED Lhasas & Skye Terriers ?

If the standard doesn't say you can't, can you?

The American standard for Havanese is the only dog standard in the world that specifically allows cords.  The Canadian standard does not address the issue of cording.  So can you, or can't you?

The Lhasa, Skye Terrier, or ShihTzu standards don't prohibit it either, but watch what would happen if we take on of those into the ring with cords.  Oh, soft silky coats, can't be corded you say.  Well, the AKC Havanese standard calls for soft, silky coats but allow cords.  Hmmmm.

Anyway...The top Havanese in Canada is corded, yet their standard does not address it.  So just because you can do something with your dog's coat, does that make it right?

Are all coated breeds going to have to change their standards to start listing what you can't do with a coat?

C'mon judges, get your stuff together and judge by what the standard really says, and really means!  That is all we ask.

Thank You Judge Andrea Spiriev

(Incorporated with Spirit of the Heartland KC)

Note about this Judge:  She had absolutely no control of her ring and no ring management skills.  Yes, she is from another country, but it is up to the club to ensure that the judges they hire know how to manage their rings.  The Group order and then later the other Neo specialty had to be changed to accommodate her shortcomings.  The specials dogs and bitches went around the ring a minimum of 13 TIMES !!!  Even GSDs aren't asked to do this.  The Neos are not a breed that has this much stamina.

It was a sad looking group by the end of breed judging.  Oh, the dogs didn't look great either.  The judge was allotted 1 hour and 35 minutes for judging Neos.

They were still in the ring 2 hours and 45 minutes later.  An entry of 38 plus 2 Veterans, and 1 brood bitch.  The ring steward was doing everything they could to help expedite things, but the judge was just not with the game plan, especially when she did not physically examine the specials.  When the AKC rep was called to the ring, the judge then went and 'petted' each dog.  NOT ACCEPTABLE.

CERF and BAER Testing
The Ibizan Hound Club of America, in conjunction with their National Specialty this week, sponsored multiple health clinics including BAER (hearing) and CERF (eye) testing.  They opened it up to all breeds, so we took advantage of the opportunity as much as we could.
Havanese Zeus, Ike, Pure, Jack, and Boo all passed their BAER tests.
Havanese Ike, Pure, Jack, Boo, and Bichons Nurple, Archie, and Tunia all passed their CERF.
It’s nice to have a parent club provide the opportunity, during their specialty, to obtain the OFFA certification that they recommends/requires.  Many OFFA tests are easy to obtain.  Some areas of the country are considerably more expensive than others, but most tests can be done close to home.  BAER testing is not readily available, and can be quite expensive.  To have it available at a show for only $50 was great.  Since the BAER test is required, by the Havanese Club of America, to obtain a CHIC, it would be wonderful if they could bring in someone and offer it at Nationals.  A CERF clinic would also be helpful at Nationals (Havanese, Bichon, etc.) because it does save a considerable amount of money to have it done at a show.  We got together 20 dogs to have CERFs done at the Kansas City Show this year because it was only $25.  The regular price in the KC Metro area is $65.  The savings of $800 was far too great to pass up.  We even brought in some of our old retired dogs (ages 12+).

Health Clinics can be big moneymakers for the club and are something to be seriously considered.  More importantly, they provide a service to the exhibitors and promote health in the breed.

Platter Does It Again

So Platter is up to his harassment again.
He emails the same person that he threatened before, via telephone.
He asks for her phone number and says that they need to talk.
It is obvious that he has her number because of previous dealings and his previous threats by phone call.
She emails him back says that the dog is finished and there is nothing to discuss.
He responds in big bold all capital letters, that THEY ARE FINISHED!!!!

Is that a threat or a promise?

So, was he on drugs the first time he called her, or this time?
Or, does he need to be?

If he didn't have so much money, we could all chip in and get him a little padded room.

It is too bad that his partner has lost so many friends because of Platter and his mean, erratic behavior.

Many of us really do miss his partner, and feel bad that we cannot even call him, because Platter answers all phone calls and emails, and even intercepted the last card that I sent.

Scott Sommer Does it Again

You gotta love people who think, nay KNOW, that they are above the law.  In this case 'the law' is rules that the rest of us are held to, but others are not.  We see it every day.  At home, at school, at work, in the store, on the road, and say it ain't so...yes, even at a dog show.

One current example:
Topeka dog shows.  5 days one weekend, 2 days off, 4 days the next weekend.  Reserved grooming.  If you reserve grooming by the deadline, for both weekends, you can leave your stuff, and even your dogs in the building on the 2 days off between shows.  When the judging program was published the entire main floor grooming was shown as reserved except for the glass walled entryway, which was free grooming.

As observed in the grooming room at Topeka:
On Thursday, August 16, Scott Sommer whines his way into the reserved grooming room and gets the people in charge to move spaces and shrink some people’s reserved space down, so that he can be in the main room.  Spaces reserved for one weekend were outlined in one color tape.  Spaces reserved for both weekends were outlined in another color.  Well, come Monday evening, anyone that has not paid for both weekends, has to leave the building.  Scott gets into a heated discussion with the club people trying to get the room set up for the upcoming show.  He refused to leave, again saying that he is entered for both weekends, and why not just move these people, and these people, and he could put his stuff in Spot X.  This still did not work for the guy in charge, as he had not reserved space and that room was full.  Yay, for the guy in charge!

But, that is not the end of the story.  Scott was NOT going to take "No" for an answer.  He went in search of Jesse James Show Chair and AKC Judge Karen Mc Farlane.  Mrs. McFarlane arrives, has a chat with the grooming room guy, and then they move around the spaces that were already reserved, Scott gets to stay in the building, and gets the space he wanted, without making a reservation.  Some of us paid well in excess of $200 for grooming space smaller that he used.  This has been standard operating procedure since these clusters started doing the back-to-back weekends at the Topeka Show Site.  This is not a new policy, nor is Sommer new to this arrangement.  So Scott Sommer got the space he wanted, got to stay in the building, didn’t have to send a reservation, and who knows if he even paid for the space?  Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.  I didn't see that part.  This is a factor because the clubs have to pay for security and insurance for the building with all of our equipment and dogs there.  I guess if you know who to suck up to, as with anything, you can get what you want.

What these people, especially those with ‘the power’ don’t stop to think about is how bad this looks to those less seasoned (or grizzled).  The other people that were in the same situation, were forced to leave, and did so without any argument BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE RULES.  How does this look to those new people who still think that this ‘sport’ is fun, or even the old people who obeyed the rules only to see someone getting preferential treatment, AGAIN?
It just makes me sad.

Well, before noon on Sunday, Scott took all of his toys and went home.

Scott was heard to say "I'm so sick of this building and this show..."
Gotta love those good sports!

Ya know...I think there are other shows this same weekend closer to home for you Scottie boy.  If you choose to go there next year, I can't express how much you, and your cheerful attitude, will be missed by all.

Thought for the day, and the election, from Thomas Jefferson:
