BeBe X Benson Girl 1 January 13, 2013

Well, the BeBe X Benson kids are 5 months old and looking good!  Everyone got baths yesterday, and of course it snowed, so no outside photo ops (it's too cold for me!).  We did some photos of the kids today, and doing the rest this week.  I will get them posted as soon as I can.  Below are the ones we did today of the BeBe X Benson puppy Girl 1.  Born August 5, 2012.  She is available to a very special show home.
She is now known as  HOLLY
That's The Original Parti Girl Eh
(Think Holly Golighty from Breakfast at Tiffany's)

Kansas City Show March 14-17 2013

In a metropolitan area of about 10,000 square miles, and over 2 million people, you would think there would be more than one or two choices of venues for dog shows.

When Heart of America Kennel Club went back to their spring show and they kept the American Royal Complex, we were all glad.  The show site is huge, the parking is great, inside bathing facilities, showers, the works.  The worst thing we could probably say is that there are not any nice hotels that are close.

This spring things will be different.  The show will be March 14-17, 2013 at Bartle Hall, in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  Think downtown, very few, if any dog friendly hotels and areas, no parking, St. Patrick's Day weekend in the city with one of the largest St. Paddy's Day Parades in the country, combined with the NAIA College Basketball Championships from March 13 - 19 right across the street, as well as the Dance America competition, also across the street. At the same time, the Big 12 Mens Tournament is at Sprint Center right down the street.  Plan for a very crowded time, with hotel room prices jacked up all over the area because of the tournaments.  Another thing to consider is the crime rate, which is bad enough on a regular day, but with all of this out-of-town activity, it will definitely go up.  Be very careful out there.

We live here and don't know if we will go.  The club is no where near as organized as the IKC in Chicago, so good luck to us all.

RIP Maggie

As many of you know, we have been caring for my late mother's dog, Maggie.  A Miniature American Whosit Hound (aka don't really know - maybe a Maltese - Yorkie cross).  Maggie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge yesterday at the ripe (really ripe) old age of 23.  At least that is 23 years that I can account for.  When she came to live with us about a year before my mom passed, we didn't think she was going to live another year, and here it is 7 years later.  She was a hoot and a pain in the you-know-what all at the same time.  Maggie will be missed, but I am sure she is sitting on my mom's lap right about now.

CH Spellbound's Wild About Harry CD RA

Big congrats to Harry and owner Barbara Barton.  They were quite a success at the Dallas Agility Trial in November.  They participated in 2 events Standard Novice and Jumpers with Weaves Novice, placing first in both classes with a 100 in the regular class, and an 87 in the Jumpers class.  One day and two legs towards his first Agility title!  What a team.
We are so proud of both of them.  Now if I can just talk Barbara into taking on another puppy!

Dave Update

Met with an Orthopedic Surgeon today.  Dave needs surgery on his knee, but we will be getting a 2nd opinion.  Dave isn't real comfortable with this Dr, and we spoke with two friends this afternoon who actually had him as their surgeon and were not at all happy.  In the mean time, Dave is hobbling around with a brace, taking some good drugs, and getting over bronchitis.

Thanks for all of your well wishes.  We will keep you posted.

Girl Scout Cookies

Have you tried the 'new' Mango Creme Girl Scout Cookies?  The description sounds absolutely yummy:
MANGO CREMES
with nutrifusion (??? - see below)
Vanilla and coconut cookies filled with a tangy mango flavored creme enhanced with the nutrients found in fruits.

I think these are the worst Girl Scout cookies ever!!!
Tasted like weird cucumbers!!!
With their love of sweets, even Dave wouldn't eat them, and Tim didn't like them.

I had never heard of 'nutrifusion' so found the website and here is about all it said:

Imagine…an all-natural, nutritional additive that…
  • Is 100% from fruits & vegetables.
  • Can provide the nutrient-rich benefits of fruits & vegetables in everyday food products.
  • Is easily understood - little consumer education needed.
  • Offers high bio-absorption…the phytonutrients are readily absorbed unlike many synthetic vitamins and minerals.
What would you call this all-natural nutritional-rich food additive?...
NutriFusion™NutriFusion™ is by far, the emerging leader in both the rapidly growing food science and nutritional supplement categories. This all-natural blend of whole food concentrations will enable more people of all ages, young adults and children to consume vital nutrients more regularly and more conveniently.

SOUNDS KIND OF SCARY IF YOU ASK ME.

I miss the good ole days, where there were actually more than a few cookies in the boxes, and they were all good.  Changing things up is not always a good thing.  The Girl Scouts have been around for ages, their cookies don't have to change every year.  The consistency is something we could always count on, with cookies, uniforms (hence the name - uniform!), etc.  Now you can see a troop with so many different uniforms you don't even know that they are all girl scouts, let alone from the same troop.

OK, I am officially old.

UPDATE 01/22/13:
I FOUND MY FOREVER HOME and Betty LOVES me.
She changes my name though, I'm now Little Missy,

On the puppy photos from November 3, this little darling was known as Ruby, her name has since been changed to Kitten or Miss Kitty.  She is totally outgoing and loves everyone.  She is going to be tiny, so will not be looking for a show home.  She needs her own home where she can be spoiled rotten, she will demand it!  If you want a 'pocket book' dog that you can carry everywhere, Kitten is your gal.

Also, if you just like the idea of having a dog that you can call by saying "Here, Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!" she is for you.

Eukanuba Sunday - Black Russian Terriers

Congratulations to Zil & Zoe for a repeat of last year's performance at Eukanuba.  BOB & BOS.

Congratulations to Zil's owner Donna Patterson,
GCH CH Zilya's Chicago Blues Fusion At Runes CD RN

and Zoe's owners Vicki Vest and Beverly Sothcott
GCH CH Valkyrie's Funny Girl RN

Good Luck to Zil in Group!

Eukanuba Saturday

Glad we didn't make the trek to Florida.
Our gut told us which way things were going to go for the whole circuit... and they did.
Sometimes, no matter how much you want to go play, you just have to be logical about things.
It is after all, just another all breed show, where an unranked class dog can win the group and maybe even Best in Show.
We shall see tonight!

A Holiday Warning

I received the following from a dear friend of mine.  It is something that we all need to consider, not only during the holidays, but at any time that we are out having a 'good time:'

"With the Holidays upon us, I would like to share this personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving.  As you know, some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a 'social session' out with friends.  Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine.  Feeling rather jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit.  That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home.

Sure enough, on the way home there was a police road block but since it was a cab, they waved me past.  I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before, I don't know where I got it and now that it is in my garage, I don't know what to do with it."

Yes, it's a cute story, but a little reminder to be more aware out on the roads, whether you are drinking or not. Watch out for the 'other guy.'  Be safe.

What a day! and not necessarily in a good way.

Another judge change in Bichons.  So we had everyone ready by 9:45 for a 10:00 ring time.  When we got to the ring, there was a hand written note about the last minute change and we were sent to another ring to be at the end of that time slot...an hour delay.  Well, not enough time to go back across the road to the grooming building, and not really any place to hang out and keep the dog relaxed, so we stayed at ringside.  Evidently there was a female in season somewhere because Movado kept trying to breed everyone, especially our dear friend Carol Haines, who came to the show, and has been a great help to us with both Bichons and Havanese.  Movado did all of this from atop the East Coast Crates.  That's talent!  With the delay, the dogs pretty much fell apart.  Mr. Mushnick pretended that he was a puppy again, Nurple was a tornado on a leash about every 10 feet, Archie was too naked for our new judge, and Movado was just too much for her.  What a mess.
BICHONS:
Nurple:  1st / Winners Dog / Best Bred By / Bred By Exhibitor Group 2
Judge Polly Smith

Judge Jean Fournier was not well today, and has not been for a while.  She struggled with her ring and was overwhelmed by the number of dogs in the Havanese ring (and every breed that she judged this weekend).  It was very sad to see a judge with so much experience and expertise struggle with her diminishing faculties.  After she retires I hope that people remember her for all of the wonderful things that she has done for dog fanciers and not for these last shows that were such a mess. She is judging the next two days and I hope she gets a better ring steward.  She will need someone strong and smart enough to help her manage the ring and keep things on track.

HAVANESE:
Boo - 2nd
Chocobeast - 4th in her class - Mrs. Fournier said that she was 'too fluffy?'

More that we did today:
At 5:30 this morning we checked out of our hotel, loaded up the dogs, and expens, and headed off to the show.  Groomed and showed.  Had everything ready to leave this show site and move 10 miles down the road to the next show, by about 3:30.  Then the question was, do we stay for the BBE Groups with Nurple, or do we drive to the Rosemont show site?  If we left then, we would be in Chicago rush hour trafftic.  We did that last night and didn't want to do it again, so hung out, and showed in Group.  Nurple needs the practice. So he got a Group 2, then we headed off for supper.  Dave found a great place called Morgan's Char House.  Great food, Awesome Service, beautiful restaurant.  We went from there to the Rosemont show sight, only to find out that they didn't open the building to set up at 5:00, but at noon, so it was pretty much full.  We were able to drive into the building, and were directed to a location that was available for set up.  We had crates, tables, ex-pens, and equipment unloaded when the show chairwoman drove up in a golf cart and informed up that we had to move because the area where we were was for indoor loading/unloading and must be kept open.  We had to move about 150 ft to the other side of that section of the building.  There were several other people also set up in the 'unloading zone.'  The show committee had their people 'relocate' all of those set-ups.  Just wait until those people show up in the morning.  There is going to be some words that I can't type!  But the guy at the door was wrong, and we just have to deal with it.  We were just lucky that we were still there when we were moved. After all of that, we checked into our new hotel, across from the new show site, where it will cost us an additional $36 per day to park.  But we can go in and out, unlike the public parking which is $13+ per day with no 'ins/outs' (where our vehicle would not have fit anyway.  We requested hypo-allergenic bedding, basically that there be no feather pillows or bedding.  Guess what?  Yep, feathers everywhere.  So much for our allergies.  So we called the front desk, and they apologized and would send someone.  While waiting for housekeeping, it was warm in the room so we tried to adjust the thermostat, at least get the fan on.  Guess what?  Yep, it didn't work either.  So, we called the front desk again, and were informed that, contrary to the fact that we have a multiple control thermostat, we have no control over our individual room temperatures,   You heard that right.  Since it is winter the entire hotel is set at 70 degrees.  Then I tried to get online (for an additional fee, of course) and that didn't work.  They had to bring me an ethernet box.  I think I'll check for bedbugs before I hit the sack.  Which I am going to do now since it is already tomorrow.

and people wonder why I don't enjoy the dog show thing as much anymore...

REMEMBER

TODAY IS 'PEARL HARBOR DAY'
The anniversary of the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii.
Many of our veterans gave their lives that day, and many more made the ultimate sacrifice in the following years defending the USA and people around the world.
Please remember these sacrifices and those of all of our veterans and their families.

Edwardsville Kennel Club, December 1, 2012

This is the last hold out to the move to Purina Farms Event Center for all dog shows in the area.  "This show site sucks!" Is pretty much the consensus.  On Thursday when we were setting up, everyone was talking about trying to take up a petition or something to express to the club how inferior this site is.  Not enough grooming space (even with the low entry), no bathing facilities, inadequate electric, and the show chair told people that they could go out to the pole barns on Thursday night.  These were not lit, have dirt and Lord knows what else on the floor, and it was cold and windy.  We let 2 or 3 people with single dogs move in with us (because we are so sweet)...I could go on.  OK, one more thing:  The bathrooms!  The bathrooms have what I am sure is at least a 10 year accumulation of dirt, dead bugs, and cobwebs around the baseboards (does anyone even use that word any more?).  It will take some industrial scraper to remove what has built up on the floor around the metal stall supports.  If the specialties that are held on Friday would just move to Purina, maybe Edwardsville Kennel Club would follow, after all, a majority of the all-breed show entries are due to the specialties.  According to members of the Edwardsville club, the main reason for not moving over to Purina Farms is Ring Stewards.  The club won't spend the money to hire a stewards club, and the club members (many of whom are older than dirt) don't want to drive back and forth to Purina to steward.  This show site is going to be the demise of this club.  If the entries keep getting lower, they won't have the money to hire judges.

That's it for now, so on to some not so exciting show results for us today:
Bichons:
Movado - 3rd in his class
