HEYYYYYY ABBOTTTTTTT!!!!!!!

Cyclone Country Kennel Club, Saturday, February 16, 2013

It was a slow day at the dog show, Dave was recovering from knee surgery, so I did my best.  Sorry that it wasn't good enough for the judges this weekend.  Too bad their choices weren't always the most correct when compared to the standard.

Because we only had two dogs to show, that does not mean that we didn't interact with many of the handlers on their way home from Westminster.  I will have comments about that later.

For now my thoughts on Saturday:

HEYYYYYY ABBOTTTTTTT!!!!!!!
(hopefully, some of you are old enough to remember that obnoxious call)

Well, I think I would rather have sat through a 24 hour marathon of “Abbott and Costello” than what we witnessed at the Des Moines Show on Saturday.  As usual with a large entry of dogs (any breed) there will be at least a couple of good ones to choose from.  Could Vicki Abbott find them in any breed that day?  Not from what we saw and heard.  Could she be nice to the exhibitors?  Again, not from what we saw and heard.   Ms. Abbot, did you really have to make someone cry?  You thought that her dog was good enough to place 1st in a the open class, the largest class of entries.  All she wanted to know was why you didn’t like him well enough to even give him reserve.  You told her to never bring a dog in that horrible condition into your ring again.  If he was that horrible, why did you give him the open class?  Could you not have just advised the owner to work more on growing and conditioning the coat?  In my opinion, that dog had more hair on his head than some of these specials whose handlers have razored in their head coat so the handler doesn't have to deal with hair falling in the dog’s eyes and face.  The difference:  this amateur-owner-handler showed her dog natural, not curled back and sprayed in place so the hair doesn’t move.  This was just one breed that you judged on Saturday.  Ms. Abbott, if your intent was to be the talk of the show, you succeeded.  It has been a long time since that many handlers, and owner-handlers, complained about a judge with no obvious medical issues.  If you have health problems that are effecting your judging, then you need to resolve them before accepting any more assignments.  If you don’t have health problems, and are basically just being a B****, then I guess there isn’t much else that we can do about it, except to not enter under you again.
-------
I learned a long time ago to not waste time asking a judge what they didn’t like about my dog, but some people still do it.  It doesn’t matter what the judge says, chances are it is mostly BS.  I just wish that they realized what an impact their comments have on that exhibitor and in turn the entire sport.

Raymore Snow & Stuff

OK, OK, OK.
Yes, I have not blogged in a while.
I have lots of stuff in the works and just don't know where to start.

Below is a photo taken in our driveway of last week's snowfall.  Being on the south side of the city, we got quite a bit more than the reported amount at Kansas City airport 55 miles north of us.

Westminster - IT"S ABOUT TIME!!!

I have been saying for years, to anyone that would listen, "It's New York City, entertainment capital of the world, and they have to play a scratchy recording of the National Anthem?  There are probably thousands of fabulous vocalists that would sing here for free."  Finally, this year world famous Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan sang this evening.

Thank you, WKC, for stepping things up a notch.

Best of Opposite Congrats to Taffy McFadden (GLAD YOU ARE FEELING BETTER!!!!) with GCH Oeste's Flirt'n With An Outlaw.
Select bitch was really nice too, GCH El Divo's Oh No You Didnt.
Congratulations to all - even the matted one who was select dog - GCH Fuzzy Farm Qbin Who's On First.
If the judge was going to award mats, she should have given something to the little black one from Canada - he actually had a correct topline going around the ring.

The video is available on www.westminsterkennelclub.org.  If they don't edit out a bunch of stuff from the live stream, and you watch while they are waiting for photos...close your eyes.  We saw way too much of Oompaloompa's ass when she bent down to pet the dog and her jean went way down.  Scary.

Another Kansas City Show Update

While at the St. Joe show last weekend, I was informed that I was incorrect about the basketball tournament at Municipal Auditorium from March 13 - 19, across the street from the dog show site. I just checked the Ticketmaster website for Municipal Auditorium ticket sales at it is still on.
http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/06004986F5D19EAD?artistid=857205&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=7
It's not one of those things that 'just get changed' but I didn't want to start anything without checking.  So based on my research, all of the activities listed in my previous posts about the Kansas City Dog Show in March, are correct.
As tempting as a local show is, I still don't know if I can bring myself to do it.  My assistant did offer to drive me back and forth, but what I would spend in gas, I would otherwise spend in parking, just wouldn't have the hassle, but then I would be trapped there all day.
I hope they get a good turnout, but it is going to be a royal pain-in-the-you-know-what.

St. Joseph, MO Show Saturday February 2, 2013

I am confused (I know, what's new?).
I have had this happen before and now I wonder if it is just a sign that the judges are getting senile and we shouldn't show to them again.  They ask for one thing and put up the handler that does the opposite.  Yes, it's the 'loose lead' instruction.  If the judge specifically requests that you move at a certain pace, or a certain style as in "don't string them up, use a loose lead," that is their prerogative, but don't reward the handlers who ignore that instruction and do whatever they want.

So you pretty much guessed it, almost all of the people in the ring listened to the judge and showed their Havanese on a loose lead.  There were plenty of good dogs to choose from.  The only two that were not shown on a loose lead were awarded Best of Breed, an Best of Winners and Best of Opposite.  Their dogs were strung up worse than Shelly or Scott showing a Bichon or a Poodle, front feet barely touching the ground.

Ask us to do whatever you want, but all we ask is to only reward the people who give it to you.

Kansas City Show Update

Well, they don't call it March Madness for nothing.  (and it's the 75th Anniversary - yay)  Anyone that lives in the KC Metro area or follows college basketball or watches the news during that time has heard the term.

The premium list is out for the March Kansas City Show.

There is good news and more bad news:

The Good News is that they are still having the health clinics.
The Bad New is that they are not on the same day.  Depending on what you want it is either Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

The Good News is that the reserved grooming for a 10 x 10 is reasonably priced at $40.
The Bad News is that you don't get electric with that.
It is another $80 for electric for the 4 days.

Just another 80 reasons to NOT do that show this year.

Before entries, and not needing a hotel, this show would cost us $195. That's just crazy!
10 X 10:   $40
Electric:   $80
5 Days Parking (4 to show and 1 to set up):  $75. (Event Parking is hiked up because of the Basketball tournaments)
And gas prices are up - $3.399 today for regular unleaded.

If you missed my previous post, check it out at:

Miniature American Shepherd

While waiting for photos on Sunday at the Des Moines show, we had the opportunity to watch the miscellaneous classes.  There were a few Berger Picards and several Miniature American Shepherds.  While watching the Miniature Am. Shepherds, I wondered what part of them was supposed to be miniature.  All I got from the exhibitors with dogs as big or bigger than some Australian Shepherds.  There were two that were noticably bigger than a 19" Aussie (just measured that weekend).  I finally got around to reading the standard and here is what it says about height:
 DISQUALIFICATIONS
Under 14 inches and over 18 inches for dogs; under 13 inches and over 17 inches for bitches. The minimum heights set forth in this breed standard shall not apply to dogs or bitches under six months of age.

Is this not the time to be eliminating dogs that are not within the standard for a new breed?  I wish someone had a really nice Miniature American Shepherd that I could show.  I would be calling a wicket on those giants, because you can't do anything from outside the ring.  I would like to see more judges taking this seriously.  The people that really worked hard to develop a new breed and write that standard would want them to DQ a dog that is over or under sized.  C'mon judges, don't worry about who you piss off or disappoint, if the dog should be disqualified, then do it!

Selena - Best of Opposite
Zeus - Select
Boo - 1st / Winners Dog - 3 point Major!
Thank You Judge Charlotte Patterson
If Boo hadn't takend Winners Dog, I might have had to strangle him!  He peed not five minutes before entering the ring and on the last go round in the open class he started to pee and wouldn't stop.  I couldn't even get him to move off of the mat.  That ended up being a good thing because the ridges in mat directed the urine away from Boo.  He peed so much that if he had been on the concrete, the hair on all four feet and his belly would have been wet.  It took about a dozen paper towels for me to clean it up.  Bill Frazier got it all on video so watch for that.  But what will the title be?  Air Traffic Controller Retires to Become Janitor at Dog Shows   or   She Flies, She Grooms, She Cooks, She Cleans Pee...all suggestions welcome.

We had an unusually tiny ring, which we would normally have complained about, but it allowed Dave to show Selena today.  She moves out at the end of a 6 ft lead, so he only had to take 2 steps and she was at the end of the diagonal and he told her to turn.  He just turned around let her pass him and told her to stop in front of the judge.  Don't know what would have happened if she had taken the Breed.  I probably would have taken her into Group.  Dave had his heavy duty 'football' brace on under his suit pants, and used a crutch for the weekend except for those few minutes in the ring.  With Selena, there was no need for him to get down on the ground with her and she is perfectly trained so wasn't a big stress on him.  In fact, one handler asked me if Selena really needed Dave.  She reminds me of my first show Bichon, Geneva.  My nephew thought he won Best Junior by showing her at a match, when the rest of us knew that she was the one in charge.  BUT, to give Dave his 'props,'  HE DID TRAIN HER!  Good Job.

Congratulations to Leo Merman and his Black Russian Terrier, Teddy.  Teddy was expertly shown by handler Lisa Bettis, winning Best of Breed both days, and a Group 3 on Sunday!
Nice wins for a very nice dog.

Our Puppy Contracts - Now We Are Stealing Puppies???

OMG What bad people we must be!  Protecting our bloodlines and the health & welfare of the puppies that we produce, and that they produce.  Damn, why would anyone want to work with people like that ?!?!?!

We have heard many times that people think our contracts are too strict.  That is their choice.  I have seen contracts much stricter, or that did not cover the puppy buyer if a show dog didn’t turn out, so we have tried to be very fair, and will work with people.

Recently, we heard that a breeder in Florida has been telling people that if they get a dog from us they had better hide them away so that we don’t come and take them.   My first reaction was “WTF?!?!?!”  Then I thought for a minute, and the person that has been spreading these ‘stories’ has co-bred with the dreaded “Platter” (see blogs dated August 31 and September 14, 2012) and evidently we are just another victim of his untruths.

Let me clarify things:  When Dave and I first teamed up started breeding dogs, the contract was all of one, count ‘em, one page long.  It is now six, yes six, pages long.  Still not the longest or most intense puppy contract I have seen, but still six pages, including Dr. Jean Dodds, DVM vaccination protocol.

This person in Florida has a very nice male from one of our first litters, and has been acquainted with Platter for many years.  Platter knew that Dave had been showing the #1 Havanese in Canada (as well as top dogs in other breeds) and knew that we were going to be breeding those bloodlines.  I believe that this Florida person got our name from Platter, and contacted us about a puppy.  We didn’t co-own our dogs at that time, and she was supposed to do all health testing, with a few other requirements.  Not a real tough contract  We have done nothing except praise her for how great the dog looked in the ring.  We have since found out that there were breedings to un-championed, un-health certified bitches, but could not do anything about it except add more paragraphs to our contract.  But back to Platter and the people in California who were ‘Long Time Dog Show People.’  They had a pet Bichon, and a pet Havanese who Platter & his partner were showing.   Yes, the Havanese did some winning because of the handlers, but it still took him forever to finish.  The dog was almost 13” tall (I stayed at their house and together with the owners, measured him).  They wanted a good Havanese bitch, but the only one we had was a small girl that we thought we might keep.  The woman flew out and picked her up, falling in love immediately.  She informed us that her intention was to breed her to her male that Platter had shown.  We told her, in no uncertain terms, “No.”  If she wanted to breed this girl to her male after fulfilling the contract, that would be her choice, but since we got puppies back, we did not want her bred to that dog as part of the contract breedings.  She understood, although she was ‘hurt’ because we didn’t like her boy.  We didn’t want his type in our bloodline.  Had he been a nice dog, and had what we were looking for, it would have been fine, but he wasn’t.

So the year goes by.  The lady hires Platter to show the little bitch.  She topped out at about 9 ¼” which, by California entries at that time, was miniscule.  They put one or two points on her, and proceed to tell everyone how ‘bad’ she was.  The lady brought her to us, we got her to 14 points within a few weekends, and the lady wanted her home.  I had so much faith in this little girl that I flew to California, at my own expense, to show her.  The judges should have been good for me, and I could not have asked her to show any better if we had been in the BIS ring at the Garden.  It was perfect, I was finishing this girl...not.  She was so different than her competition that the judges didn’t know what to do with a mover, with a really soft, really silky coat.  They chose big and clunky.  Oh, well, you pays your money, you takes your chances.  It cost me almost $500 in airfare to lose.  I was bummed.  A month or so later, we met a show and she finished.  Platter was pissed!!!  I finished a dog that they could only put a single or two on.  Later, we heard from judges that he was going around telling them how bad our dogs were and how “that bitch didn’t deserve to be finished.”  AND That started while he was showing her!  When I confronted him, he of course, denied it.  After all, he had called me to tell me how bad she was, and I told him that I would reserve my decision for a time when I could go over her.   Why would judges approach us with that information if it weren’t true?

So the months go by and all is quiet on the Western Front.  In the spring, the little bitch is about 15 months old, and we get a call from her owners.  They want to breed her on her next heat cycle (in a month or so), and they want to breed her to their big dog.  What part of “NO! - read the contract” don’t these people get.  Before being bred she must have all of her health testing, and will be bred to a stud dog that we approve in writing.  The health certification cannot even be completed until after she turns 2 years of age.  We will not approve this male as he is 4 times the size of this bitch, as are most of the dogs in his pedigree.  Don’t want it, won’t have it.  Do it later if you must but not while she is under contract.

Another couple of months pass, and we lost one of our beloved BRTs in a sudden and unexpected way.  We received condolences from around the world, and one of those was a sympathy card from the owner of the little bitch, with a note:  “Hopefully this will cheer you up, Ally is pregnant with ‘big dog’ puppies, and is due in a couple of weeks.”  “WTF ?!?!?!?”  What part of NO didn’t they get?  She was just barely 18 months old, no health testing, and was bred to a dog that we specifically refused.    Guess what?  Platter told them the contract didn’t matter and there wasn’t anything that we could do., so breed her if they wanted to.

We contacted them and offered them a compromise to the contract, allowing her to keep the bitch, and continue on with the contract.  Platter gave her his advice which was to ignore any offers, because they had the bitch and the puppies, and possession was 9/10 of the law.  What could they do?  Besides, their son worked at some big time law firm in San Francisco and would handle it.  They insisted that they would give us puppies back from that litter and the contract would be over...NOT.

Because of their blatant disregard for the contract, and basically flipping us off when we made a very generous offer, we did file a suit against them.  It is the only time that we have ever filed suit against the owner of a bitch puppy for violation of the puppy contract.  What would you have done?

The contract said that for ‘unauthorized breeding’ the bitch and litter came back to us.  The attorney asked, “What part of this didn’t they understand?”

When registering a litter, online with the AKC, the owner had to check a box saying that she had permission from all owners of the bitch to register the litter.  With Platter’s guidance, she checked that box, “because after the litter is registered, what can they do?”  Again the attorney asked the same question, “What part of that didn’t she understand?”

They played stupid and said that they didn’t understand these dog contracts.  Well, for one thing if you didn’t understand, why did you sign it?  And for another, you both deal with contract negotiations for major medical organizations, and you didn’t understand a one-page contract with no legal-eeze?  Maybe that was it, we should have made it more complicated.  So we did.

Even after being screwed over, we didn’t want these people to feel so duped by Platter that they were totally turned off by the dog show world, so actually allowed them to keep 2 puppies, hoping that they would ‘see the error of their ways.’

Their big time attorney son did come in to play, when he delivered the bitch and the puppies to us.  This little bitch still lives with us.

Oh, and that ‘Long Time Dog Show” thing that Platter told me, NOT.  The male he was showing for these people was the first show dog they ever had, and I think the last.   Platter makes another negative impact on the dog show world with just another of his lies.

So if this makes you think that we go and steal puppies back, so be it, but now you have the facts.

I would much rather NOT sell a puppy than sell them to someone who intends to break the contract.  We have clauses in there and, being a living document, amend it when something else happens to us, or one of our friends.

If you want a story about stealing a dog, I have one of those too.  Only the person showed up at a show with fake paperwork and a sob story, and took one of our dogs from a handler threatening her with Grand Theft.  I’ll tell you about that one and how much it cost just to get our own dog back some other time.

BeBe X Benson Girl 1 January 13, 2013

Well, the BeBe X Benson kids are 5 months old and looking good!  Everyone got baths yesterday, and of course it snowed, so no outside photo ops (it's too cold for me!).  We did some photos of the kids today, and doing the rest this week.  I will get them posted as soon as I can.  Below are the ones we did today of the BeBe X Benson puppy Girl 1.  Born August 5, 2012.  She is available to a very special show home.

Kansas City Show March 14-17 2013

In a metropolitan area of about 10,000 square miles, and over 2 million people, you would think there would be more than one or two choices of venues for dog shows.

When Heart of America Kennel Club went back to their spring show and they kept the American Royal Complex, we were all glad.  The show site is huge, the parking is great, inside bathing facilities, showers, the works.  The worst thing we could probably say is that there are not any nice hotels that are close.

This spring things will be different.  The show will be March 14-17, 2013 at Bartle Hall, in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  Think downtown, very few, if any dog friendly hotels and areas, no parking, St. Patrick's Day weekend in the city with one of the largest St. Paddy's Day Parades in the country, combined with the NAIA College Basketball Championships from March 13 - 19 right across the street, as well as the Dance America competition, also across the street. At the same time, the Big 12 Mens Tournament is at Sprint Center right down the street.  Plan for a very crowded time, with hotel room prices jacked up all over the area because of the tournaments.  Another thing to consider is the crime rate, which is bad enough on a regular day, but with all of this out-of-town activity, it will definitely go up.  Be very careful out there.

We live here and don't know if we will go.  The club is no where near as organized as the IKC in Chicago, so good luck to us all.

RIP Maggie

As many of you know, we have been caring for my late mother's dog, Maggie.  A Miniature American Whosit Hound (aka don't really know - maybe a Maltese - Yorkie cross).  Maggie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge yesterday at the ripe (really ripe) old age of 23.  At least that is 23 years that I can account for.  When she came to live with us about a year before my mom passed, we didn't think she was going to live another year, and here it is 7 years later.  She was a hoot and a pain in the you-know-what all at the same time.  Maggie will be missed, but I am sure she is sitting on my mom's lap right about now.

Big congrats to Harry and owner Barbara Barton.  They were quite a success at the Dallas Agility Trial in November.  They participated in 2 events Standard Novice and Jumpers with Weaves Novice, placing first in both classes with a 100 in the regular class, and an 87 in the Jumpers class.  One day and two legs towards his first Agility title!  What a team.
We are so proud of both of them.  Now if I can just talk Barbara into taking on another puppy!
