NY BICHON FRISE NEEDS HELP

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

I just saw this on Dave's facebook page.  I hope that one of you will know someone who can help.  

It is a Bichon picked up by animal control. Brooklyn Center, NY - Microchipped, neutered male, in great condition. 

When I see this I think of the time that I found a dog in the middle of the road, in the rain, in the middle of the night on my way home from work.  After a couple of tries, I finally just opened the car door and told him that if he "wanted to be saved, get in" and he did!  I bathed him and realized that I had a purebred Bichon on my hand with collar and tags, but the address was almost 40 miles away.  Lucky & strange, I thought.  I called several times a day for almost two weeks.  Getting madder with each call.  Come to find out the owner was out of the country for a month and his housekeeper, who lived about 5 miles from where I found him, was watching the dog.  (he later found out that he was just locked in her garage and escaped) The dog had been gone for days when I found him, and the housekeeper either didn't know what to do or was afraid that she would be in trouble, and hoped the dog would come back.  (she was an illegal). 

Anyway, I hope that there is a Bichon Rescue in that area or just a breeder or friend that will help.  Please share this. The dog runs out of time in 2 days.  How would you feel if that was your dog and you went on vacation for the holidays and now your dog was in a shelter.  

He is microchipped but evidently not registered, maybe the breeder has kept records?...

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.  The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside.  "That laundry is not very clean; she doesn't know how to wash correctly.  Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."  Her husband looks on, remaining silent.  Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments. A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband:  "Look, she's finally learned how to wash correctly.  I wonder who taught her this? "  The husband replies, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."  

And so it is with life... What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.

Merry Christmas!

Several years ago The Kansas City Star published a 12 Dogs of Christmas.  Two of our dogs were selected.  Bichon Trina, CH Victoire Diamond Rio Citrine, (Bred and Co-owned by Vickie Halstead ) was photographed in a tu-tu with ballet slippers for the "9 Ladies Dancing".  Havanese Zelda, CH That's the Ocarina of Time 2 Eh, (owned and bred by Darlene & David Scheiris, was photographed with 2 turtles for the "2 Turtle Doves."  My Bichon AnnaRose was also photographed, just for kicks.  The photos were incorporated into a poster that was widely distributed.  What a lot of fun it was to walk through the newspaper office rolling crates with 10 dogs, and watching the photographer try to photograph 9 Bichons at once!  It would have been OK if he hadn't kept telling his assistants to try to get the dogs' attention.  

Needless to say he went back to just one at a time.

Side note to Zelda's photo:  The office people were all worried about the dogs peeing on something.  As soon as they put the turtles on the table, they peed!  
It was hard to believe that turtles could pee that much, but I guess that's why I had to clean the turtle aquarium so often when I was a kid.  We all had to laugh because the turtle guy didn't have anything to clean up with and all of the dog people who were there had brought cleaning supplies, just in case!  So of course we all handed him stuff to start cleaning.

OK, we all know that Dog Show Judges talk.  They talk about us, about our dogs, they gossip, and if they don't spread it, they certainly hear it.  After all, for the most part, they are people too. 

Someone asked me a question last night about a Judge's facebook page.  I am not that up on facebook, every now and then I put something on Dave's page, but that is as far as it goes.  As I understand it, one person (we'll call them person 'H') can post something on another person's (person 'J') then person 'J' can remove it, leave it alone, or comment on it.  So, let us 'assume' (I know, I know) that Person H posted a show photo on Person J's facebook page.  Person J highly awarded Person H in this photo.  That should be enough said, BUT, is it really appropriate for Person J to make a comment on the photo to the effect that the dog in the photo was the only thing that made judging that day worthwhile?

AKC/Eukanuba Groups Saturday, December 14, 2013

I'd love to hear from someone who went to watch groups last night.  The way AKC is doing it, selling tickets to Groups separate from the day tickets, seems to be preventing people who are actually there, from being able to watch groups.

Dave heard from several people, even some Junior Handlers who wanted to take their Grandparents, but could not get tickets because they were sold out.  From what I saw on the live video stream, by the Non Sporting Group the seats were pretty empty.

They are putting the fear of not having a seat into people so far ahead of time that people are ordering tickets, and then when they do not attend, there is no provision for a refund or even the ability to turn the tickets into somewhere so that those who are in attendance and really WANT to go to see the group have that option.  Maybe they couldn't afford to buy tickets in advance, maybe they entered just hoping they could come, and when the money and schedule all worked out for them, now they cannot attend all of the events.

This is just another step in the wrong direction for AKC.  They are pre-selling tickets to make money and not thinking about the exhibitors, yet again.  The last few years that I attended, it was more crowded by Best in Show, but by no means was it packed, yet it was 'sold out' and no one was allowed in without a ticket.
If you want to pre-sell tickets, fine, but limit the number sold ahead of time to 50% or less of capacity, then the people who show up and want to go, at least have a fighting chance.

At least make a provision for returning/cancelling a ticket order.  Do like on Broadway when someone cancels a purchased seat...re-sell it! Then donate the proceeds from the second sale to the Canine Health Foundation.  This option would make a multitude of people and dogs happy!

Chinese Crested Breed Video AKC/Eukanuba Dog Show, Saturday, December 14, 2013

Just watched the Chinese Crested video.  In the BBE bitch class, at about minute 54:00, the armband #32, which ended up being Winners bitch is interesting to watch.  The breeder/owner/handler used her foot to keep the bitch from sitting after stopping in front of Judge Peter Green after the down & back.  What's with that?
I gave someone a piece of my mind (I know, I don't have that much to spare) for using their foot to 'move' the rear on a big dog.  I know they were 'pushing' gently but it gave the impression that they were kicking the dog to make him move.  Now someone is sticking their big foot under a puppy to make it stand in the ring?  C'mon people, that's just not right.

Selena's Eyes & HCA Judges Education

So regarding Selena, in the words of today's judge, Liz Simon, "absolutely HATE her eyes.  They are big round BICHON eyes."  WTF?????  Yes, when you examine any dog and pull their hair back you can pull their eyes open.  Hell, I can do that to a person if I wanted, but when resting naturally a Havanese has a large almond shaped eye and a Bichon has a large round eye.  And large is relative to the size of their head, not bugged out pug eyes.

What dog was Ms. Simon looking at today?  I hardly think that Dr. Robert Smith would have put up a dog for Best of Breed at the US National Specialty with a fault like that, nor would any of the hundreds of other judges who have awarded this bitch.  I guess Dave should have joined the other handlers who, after seeing how badly she judged the classes, didn't even bother to show their specials.

This judge is on the HCA Judges Education.  That is very scary!  Is she telling other judges that Selena is incorrect, or is she just teaching them incorrectly?  Who knows?  BUT WE ALL CARE.

US Coton de Tulear Club - AKC FSS OPEN SHOW - Friday December 13, 2013

That damn Dave!  He called me and got me all excited - tough to do these days.  He called and said that Dudley got his 3rd Best in Show - NOT!!!  Dudley did get a Group 1, shown by his breeders at the AKC Open Show today in Orlando.  There were 21 GBGVs entered.  I wish I could have seen that.  Probably the biggest entry ever at an AKC show, maybe any show, in the US.
