KANSAS CITY SHOWS...OFF THE GRID

I WAS KIDNAPPED!!!

Forced to stay in the motorhome with my husband at the KC dog shows.  Can you believe it!!!!????  He already had one Darlene staying with him, but he was selfish and wanted two!

No internet and my phone had a spaz-attack, and didn't know what day or time it was (yes, just like me!)  Said 'unable to connect call' yet I guess some people still heard me 'chatting' with the darn thing.

It wasn't a bad show weekend though, took home lots of ribbons and points, although none of those really big ribbons.  Only three breeds to show but lots of ring conflicts.  Saw some old friends, made some new ones, pissed off some people (but I guess it wouldn't be a dog show with me if that didn't happen), and found how how big of Kahunas one guy had, still shaking my head over that one.
Some people never cease to amaze.

I will dig through the memory banks and post all of the results that I can remember.

HOPE YOU ALL HAD A FABULOUS WEEKEND!!!

Bichon Frise Nurple - Westminster Award of Merit

Nurple's photo with Judge James Reynolds arrived this week.

I did find it odd that no ribbons were given for Award of Merit.  We did received a small, boxed, medallion engraved with the Westminster Kennel Club logo on one side and "Award of Merit 2015" on the other though!

Thank You again Judge Reynolds for appreciating our great moving boy!

CRUFTS BEST IN SHOW HANDLING CONTROVERSY - 2015

CRUFTS BIS HANDLING CONTROVERSY...

I am not positive where I stand on this but am leaning towards it being THE JUDGE'S CALL.  To me it falls into the same category as a breed standard calling for, or a judge telling you to show on a loose lead, then rewarding the dogs who are strung up so tight that their front feet don't touch the ground.  If the ring belongs to the judge, and the judge works for The Kennel Club, then the judge should have been informed by The Kennel Club of the handling restrictions/requirements/prohibitions etc.  Unless the clubs are going to take away from the authority of the judge in the ring and place a referee in the ring to catch things that are happening when the judge is looking elsewhere, and there is an 'instant recall' video feature, we have to leave the judging and awarding of ribbons or disqualifications up to that judge.  After all isn't that why the clubs hire them and we enter under them?

I witnessed a judge DQ a purple/blue dog this past weekend.  BRAVO TO HIM!!!  Not even in the grandest old-lady hair colors was this natural to any living, breathing creature.  A flower maybe, but a warm blooded critter, definitely not!

We have all seen things happen in the ring that were not right, whether it was handling 'technique' or hitting of a dog, or a dog who actually bit his owner (and drew blood-yes in the ring) but I, for one, was told by and AKC rep that the judge had to see it for anything to be done about it.

I have been wanting to write something about a HORRIFYING action that I saw when boarding one of the shuttles in NYC getting ready to go to the Piers this year.  A woman with a Newfy and short-woman syndrome literally punched her dog in the head.  The dog was not misbehaving, he barely reacted to another dog, a Portie I believe, that made a somewhat aggressive move towards him.  The Newfy evidently had enough of a reaction to startle the owner/handler so she punched him in the head.  Not a little tap, or a swat as a minor correction, but A FULL FISTED PUNCH!!!  Then she did it again!  It took a minute for me to realize what I had just witnessed, and when she drew her arm back, hand clenched into a fist, for the third time, I yelled at her to stop.  I told her she had better not hit that dog again, or she would be dealing with more than just me.  I was the only one, of all the people boarding that bus, who said anything.

And now with the poisoning and BIS handling controversy at Cruft's, no wonder people have the wrong idea about show dogs and show people.

However, it wasn't the wrong idea about that woman.  I wouldn't want to be a show dog with that owner either.

Boy, do these people take their working dogs seriously!!! An entry of over 700 WORKING DOGS!!!
Top ranked dogs in almost every breed.  Group placing dogs from The Garden and Eukanuba.  Highly advertised dogs.  What a tough competition it is here, but fun and hearing lots of great compliments from judges and spectators alike about Varias.

AND SPEAKING OF "TOP RANKED DOGS"

Here are Varias' 2015 rankings as of January 31, 2015:

Sorry, I don't have the judges available right now but thought I would post the results.  Now updated below.  My computer (a MacBook Pro) keeps getting popups saying that I need to update my Windows Vista on my PC!!!  Every time I click on an email, or any other page for that matter, it takes forever to open and advertisements start popping up.  I can't search so if I need anything I can't just type in a word, I litterally have to scroll through every file to find it.  This all started a couple of months ago with i-tunes saying it had a problem.  I have never used i-tunes.  AAACCCKKK !!!!!
If it wasn't for the gazillion dollars worth of programs that I cannot switch to a PC I would chuck this darn thing out the window!

If we aren't answering emails right away, that is part of the reason.  I am currently using the hotel computer to try to catch up but there is now a line so I need to get going.

So, back to the show...

Varias was not shown in Group because he seemed to be feeling poorly in the afternoon, so we opted to spend 3 hours at the Vet in New Jersey with him, and check out a few more things.  Still on antibiotics.  I sure hope he doesn't have to go through what I did from November through January!

Please say a prayer for him to be back to 100% very soon.

WHAT RIGHT DOES HE HAVE????

OK PEOPLE.
I AM SO EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED
and SAD.
Sad for us, sad for the people who do not think before they type, and sad for all of the people who believe things that are written without confirmation or verification.

I am so tired of people saying and writing crap about us and now that we have a winning BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER in the ring again, those people are starting again.

The following was posted on facebook about our BRT Varias, who successfully completed his OFFA Certification for ELBOWS, HEART, HIPS, PATELLAS, and DENTITION last September.  He also had his CERF done, but I have it sitting on the computer at home and need to send it in.

I have gone onto Dave's facebook page and posted this response:
OK PEOPLE…DARLENE SCHEIRIS HERE.  AND I AM PISSED OFF!!!  Richard Hawkes, a BRTCA Member, and I just found out that he is also a vet,  posted on facebook that my BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER dog Varias 'probably' has bad elbows, because he didn't make the turn well, moved less than perfectly straight, and slipped on the corner in the ring at Westminster.  Varias was trying to cut in front of Dave.  He has only been shown since October 2014.  It's not like he is an experienced show dog with all surfaces and environments.  WTF !!!!  Have you checked the OFFA PAGE?  How can you say that against any dog without an exam or x-ray?

AND ARE YOU AN ORTHOPEDIC VETERINARIAN?  On September 29, 2014 we had Varias' HIPS, ELBOWS, PATELLAS, CARIDAC and DENTION OFFAS done and he has NORMAL ELBOWS, GOOD HIPS, NORMAL PATELLAS & CARDIAC, AND FULL DENTITION.  His CERF was also Normal, however it is sitting on my computer at home waiting to be sent in.

GCH THAT'S WHAT'S IN A NAME
http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1680903#animal

If you want to suggest to someone, as you did, that they might want to have the elbows checked on their bitch, that's one thing, but do not insinuate that because their bitch might move as my dog did that one time in the ring, that my dog has a genetic defect because he was a dorky young dog and did not show his best.  We have had several people call and email concern for our dog based on your posts.

DR. HAWKES, THIS WAS A TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL,  AND WE ARE WAITING FOR YOUR RETRACTION AND APOLOGY.   And maybe next time the appropriate response, if you were truly concerned, would have been to email David Scheiris privately and express your concern for the health of our dog rather than make it look like you know what you are talking about and telling the world that our dog has bad elbows, WHEN CLEARLY HE DOES NOT.

And another note:
RICHARD HAWKES, if you had bothered to ask, I would have told you exactly that PLUS the fact that we almost pulled him because he was under the weather had been on antibiotics for just a few days before the show, under veterinarian care.  His new owner was in town and this was her first experience at a show, after getting Varias.  We wanted her to be able to see him in the ring in person.  He felt well enough to get around, but was not at 100%.  Not an excuse, just the facts.  A very nice dog won the breed, and that is all that matters.  Varias did not show well enough to win on Tuesday, and I will be the first to admit that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Varias truly seemed to enjoy all of the attention he was getting in the benching area, as did his owner, Dr. Charlene M. Cassidy, who also enjoyed seeing him in the NY Times, The NY Post, the Vogue website, Fox 5 NY, and several other media outlets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now that I am thinking more about this, Mr. Hawkes, is this just sour grapes because Varias beat your male for WINNERS DOG at NATIONALS, has already earned his GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP and been awarded a GROUP PLACEMENT?  And Varias has also beaten your bitch special, shown by Rhanda Glenn, several times?  Can't you just say congratulations and move on?

BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIERS

VARIAS - No placement today :(

Judge John Ramirez

Varias was definitely not on his best game today.  He went off of his food last Sunday/Monday.  That is not unusual for a BRT to self-regulate and not eat for a couple of days.  (I wish I had that kind of control :)  BUT, when he still didn't eat much at all when we got to NY, we called the vet.  He had already lost a bit of weight, and was lethargic.  We got him on antibiotics right away and by the next morning he was better, but the damage was already done.  He is still on the antibiotics and feeling much better, but he is just like us, even when you are feeling better it is not 100%.  I am just glad that he felt well enough to show and visit with 100s of people at the show.  It was a good day with his new owner Char, and her first experience at a dog show with Varias.  It would have been better if she had a ribbon to take home, but maybe next year!

Walmart is at it again!!!

With all of the problems with people stealing credit card information I cannot believe Walmart has started a new policy.

Last year some scam artists walked right into our local Walmart put in all new credit card swiping machines and stole everyones card and PIN numbers.

I went into Walmart yesterday and they no longer require a PIN number for a debit or credit card purchase in any amount.  New corporate policy they say.

I am a big fan of PIN numbers and zip codes (like some gas stations require).  It isn't much but at least it is something.

So I guess I am not only warning people, but informing the bad guys:  If your card is stolen, Walmart is going to be the first place they will be going.  No PIN numbers, no signatures, no other ID required.

UNBELIVEABLE !!!

Well, we kind of knew that this might happen today, but still had to try to see if Sosa would recognize how much better Varias is that the dog she gave a group placement to yesterday.  No such luck, it takes a judge with a lot of self confidence in their knowledge of the breed to put a different dog up for breed the day after they placed them in the group. They all have their types, and I guess our boy isn't hers.

Another Example Of Why Handlers Get A Bad Rap

Well, I guess it's just like anything thing else, you have the good handlers and the ones that make the rest of them look bad, for one reason or another.  Sometimes they are in both categories, it just depends who you ask.  But I think this latest stunt just put Handler X onto my 'Naughty' list.

Hander 'X' has been showing for Owner 'A' for several years.  She has good dogs.  X has won at multiple National Specialties & Eukanuba with her dogs.  My husband actually referred her to him when she was looking for a handler in her area of the country.  Owner A has contracted with X to show her bitch this year and he has been doing so.  Last weekend or so a really 'bad' handler, let's call her 'YYY' (because that is what most people thought when they would see her, for one reason or another) was suspended from the AKC.  The reason at this point is not the issue, but it was a big suspension, which generally means that is wasn't a first offense.  YYY was handling a decent dog for Owner B.  Since that YYY is suspended, she cannot go to shows.  I do not know who approached who, (or is it whom?) but now Handler X is showing the dog for Owner B.  Did X approach B because he heard about the suspension and saw more $$$.  Did Owner B approach Handler X because she didn't know better and knew that he showed that breed?  Did B have an ulterior motive to lure X away from A to better her chances in the ring?  Who knows?  That is not the point right now.

But now X has dumped A as a client and taken on the dog from B.  How much notice?  Last weekend, the day A was supposed to bring her bitch to X, so that he would have her to bring to this weekend's show that started yesterday.  He just dumped her and left her high and dry.  No transportation to the show for her dog, no handler for her dog.

THIS IS JUST NOT RIGHT.   If it were the other way around, and A wanted a new handler, she would have to give notice to X, or be liable for the handling fees for the shows already contracted.  At the very least X should have transported A's bitch to the show and found another handler to take the bitch in the ring, if that is what A wanted.

When X was asked why the bitch was not in the ring, his response was 'She is being bred.'  After discussions with Owner A, the bitch is entered and was to be shown by X, at this show.  She is NOT in season.  X said that she was 'flagging' while on the Florida Circuit.  This handler has bred dogs for over 20 years, he knows that means that she was ready to be bred.  X knew that A wanted to breed her, but it would appear that he knew she was in season but wasn't willing to give up the money or the ring exposure and send her home.  Owner A would still have been responsible for the handling fees for the shows that were contracted, whether the bitch was shown or not, if she brought her home for breeding.  Now, Owner A did not only probably miss a chance to breed her bitch, but has been left out in the cold by a handler to whom she has been dedicated for at least 4 or 5 years (by my count, but it could be longer).

When handlers do crap like this, it makes the rest of them look bad.  At the very least, X should have had an in depth conversation with A, and come to a mutual agreement about what is fair.  X should have tried to get her another handler.  What about X's wife?  Or is she already showing another special in that breed?  They regularly take dogs in direct competition with each other.  At least A's bitch would be in the ring.  Are they now at least reimbursing A for her entries?  The money isn't the point, it's about what is professional, and what is right and fair to all parties.

SORRY FOLKS, but it looks like our handling contract will be getting a little longer, to add more protection for the client.  Just like our puppy contracts, I can tell you stories about most of the paragraphs, and who got screwed by whom, prompting us to add another protection to the contract, for us and the purchasers.

Everyone who doesn't get exactly what they think they should, tends to remember things from their prospective.  Clients do need to remember that this is how the Handlers make their living.  This is not their 'weekend away for a dog show.'  When an appointment is scheduled you need to be there or we could be with another client.  But that also works both ways.  If they tell you to be there at 2 and they aren't ready for you, well, I guess it's like going to the doctor, you just hope they are late for a really good reason, but now had better give you all of the attention that you deserve!  We have some fabulous clients that understand the heirarchy, the stress, and the schedule  They are a joy to be around.  On the other hand, many clients that we have had in the past don't take this seriously.  Of course they want to win, but will not listen to instructions (don't walk the white dog in the dirt, or on the black parking lot, this is how to brush them, etc) or think that when given a time to arrive to have their dog groomed, is just a suggestion and really means 'sometime that day.'  When Dave has 10 dogs to groom for the next day and your time to be there is 2:00 and you don't show up until 7, and the dog is not even dematted, you get what you get.  He already has his evening planned out until the building closes and again from the time it opens the next day.

It is a handler's responsibility to present the dog to the best of his/her ability, but it is the client's responsibility to make sure that the dog is not totally trashed when they show up.  Giving a dog a bath, means that you must also blow it dry properly.  If you can't do that, it makes the handler's job that much harder, and takes more time.  Many clients don't want to leave the dog with the handler, however doing so allows the handler to bond with the dog, tweak the grooming bit by bit throughout the weekend, and if the dog needs another bath, it's the handler's fault not the owners.

I could go on, but will probably have to do that in another post.
BIG HUGS TO ALL THE GREAT CLIENTS WE HAVE!!!!
Little Hugs to all of the less that stellar clients we have had, as we definitely learned something from you.
